German Empire (1871 - 1874)

The first series of German stamps was made in 4 forms. . For the northern part of the empire they were valued in Groschen. For the southern part, the stamps were valued in Kreuzer. All stamps were made with an embossed center bearing an eagle. There are two types of embossing,

Eagle with small shield

Eagle with large shield

Notice the height difference in the two 2.5 Groschen stamps. The left one is shorter indicating it comes from the top or bottom of the sheet

At the same time, some high value stamps were issued which look very similar to those used in the Norddeutsche Postbezirk. These stamps were supposed to be cancelled by writing the date and place of usage in pen.

In 1874 some stamps were issued that were overprinted with the value in the center of the stamp.
