German Empire (1902 - 1919)

In 1902 Württemberg joined the Empire. The Germania series was re-issued with the country name "Deutsches Reich"

The first issue did not have a watermark.

The 2 Mark stamp was issued with Gothic (left) and Latin characters (right)

In 1905 the stamps were given a watermark. As the war started in 1914, printing quality began to deteriorate. For several values the "peace time stamps" are on the left and the "war time stamps" are on the right. The difference is quite striking.

In 1916, new values were issued. There are big variations in color.

After the war, the 2 pfennig was issued without shading and two new values were added.

The Germania stamps were also issued in booklets. These are some horizontal se-tenants from booklets

Some vertical se-tenants. Notice the cut perforations in many of the stamps.

The early booklets contained private advertising labels. Stamps with these labels attached are very rare.

The booklets were made from sheets. In the middle the stamps were printed in tęte - bęche pairs sometimes with a blank field in between.

In 1912, air services started to operate. These required a special airstamp plus the regular Germania stamp.
