Western USA

This short vacation we went to the South-Western part of the States. We took a flight to San Diego and picked up a car there. In San Diego we visited the world famous San Diego Zoo. We saw lots of animals we have never seen before and also the layout of the zoo is very nice. The animals acted much more natural then I have seen is most other zoos. The next day in San Diego we went whale watching. We were lucky, we spotted a family of 4 or 5 whales. I wasn't able to make any decent pictures, but it is a very impressive experience to see these huge creatures op pretty close.

From San Diego we went to LA. Our main target there was Universal Studios. We were lucky, the park was quite and we have seen all shows and been to all rides without having spent more than a few minutes waiting. There were rides featuring ET, Jurasic Park, Terminator and Back to the Future. There was a Wild West show and a show around Waterworld. Throughout the park there were characters from the different Universal films.

Next stop was Las Vegas. Especially at night the Strip presents a nice spectacle. We stayed in two different hotel, the Excalibur, which has King Arthur and the round table as theme and the Luxor where everything revolved around acient Egypt. Many hotels have an attraction in front of their entrance. Excaliber has a battle between Merlin and a dragon, The Mirage has a vulcano that erupts every 30 minutes and in front of Treasure Island, a English warship and a pirate stage a real naval battle.

From Las Vegas we made a flight over the Grand Canyon. We flew over Lake Mead, the Grand Canyon and the Hoover dam. The pictures give some idea of what it is like but the real thing was absolutely awesome.
